Eiri and Shuichi - Mine

"Mine" initial sketch

I can finally actually show the development process of a drawing. This sketch was the basic idea I wanted to do. Drew it in the little notebook I am using for my story notes so when I doodled it I almost got mad at myself again because I was doing it on line paper. Then I decided I wanted to develop it larger and in pencil.

It actually has been a nice little bit to have in the notebook, as a reminder of what the storylines are about. I guess it is a little talisman doodle.

Mine

The next step was the pencil drawing. I had sketched out Eiri's profile on Conference Day, just a 30-second scribble. Picked it up Saturday and ended up drawing on it almost continuously from 11am to 3pm except for a nap toward the end.

I referenced the front of Eiri's hair and Shu's eye and hair to get it looking relatively correct. "Referenced" means I walked into the other room, looked at the manga for about five minutes, put the manga down, walked back into the room where I was sketching, sat down and drew from memory. That's right, I pulled it from my pea brain. Try it sometime, and see how much you remember.

Surprised myself when I saw I was making the shadows really dark to start off and not building up the darkness slowly as I am prone to do.

Asked rat to 'pose' Eiri's arm and neck for me so I was able to get the twist of the shoulder wrinkles right.

rat really likes their eyes and I am pleased I was able to get the 'possessive' look I was wanting. rat commented he thought they were looking at Tohma off-camera. I was just going for a general 'hands off my man' kind of look.

Pretty much gave up on the hand. It was almost running off the page so I just let it go. The wrist is really not right. Started from Shuichi's neck and worked my way forward. Now I would make the hand 'cup' Eiri's shoulder.

Used pencils F, B3, B4 and a little bit of 2H to make sharp hair points. Of course, lots of kneaded eraser for highlights. Did a lot of stumpwork again with this one.

Of course, now I look at it and see Eiri's head is a little too small, but that's okay. It IS one of my first drawings of these charas and I learned a lot about the process of capturing this style, which is totally different than DBZ.

"Mine" first final

Thought I could lighten up the bodies by darkening up the background so I tried a few pattern fills and found one I liked. Since I reinstalled my 3rd-party edges program I thought I would try something on this pic. The edge adds an interesting 'grounding' and framing to the suspended bodies.

Added the title, sig/date, and the copyright/website info.

Please be patient while it loads.

After living with this image for almost a year, I decided to lighten the background and darken the pencil work. This is now the final graphic.

I do like this one. It is how I see these boys when their emotions are stripped down and they are being totally honest about their feelings for each other.

So, who is the most possessive, Eiri or Shu?
