is the fifth drawing where I used photographs as part of the background.
No references were used to make this piece except for some drawings
in a Manga
Pose Resource book for Eiri's fabric-draped lap and legs. You
can see the differences in my current style compared to this past
style. I was still developing a style for this universe at the time
I made these drawings. What I draw now is much better than this,
but these older drawings helped develop the style I have today so
they are valid as learning tools to show the progression of my style. So... that night I added the chair definition and for some reason, a beach towel, shaded the rear-end and the side of the lounging person's body and did a few little shading touchups and extra line erases. I declared it completed and signed/dated it, using both the old date and the new date. It is like a 'drawing' dated and a 'drawing's done' date. Eiri's legs were difficult to draw because of the foreshortening. I do not think I was that successful with it but it looks okay, I suppose. I am just not good at drawing foreshortening without using a reference specific for the pose. I had to guess by looking at a few drawings in a Manga Pose Resource book and cobble a blend of sketches into one pose here. The drawing was scanned and adjusted so the piece had a stronger contrast than the original drawing. Photos of palm trees and a beach shot, taken by the onna in Hawaii and California, were used to add to the background. I extending the beach photo so it would cover the entire lower half of the drawing, even behind the figures, so the sand and rocks would be seen. A Photoshop built-in texture was used for the chaise wood. The pareo and and beach blanket patterns are graphics taken from The Seam Shoppe website, an excellent place to find yummy fabrics with a tropical theme. (http://www.tropicalfabricsonline.com) |
